BIOMECHANICAL AND GAIT ASSESSMENT

BIOMECHANICS

Abnormal foot biomechanics may be the main reason you develop pain and injury in the feet, ankles, knees and legs. Our experienced podiatrists are highly skilled and trained to detect biomechanical abnormalities that may be the cause of your pain or may predispose you to injury and pain in the future.

Foot and leg biomechanics involves the movement of structures, alignment of your joints and functioning of the feet and legs while standing and during walking. The results gained from the biomechanical assessment and gait analysis helps our Podiatrist’s to recommend the most effective management plan for your specific issue.

This individualised approach to assessment and treatment provides effective, targeted and prompt recovery from injury and relief of painful symptoms.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

The initial biomechanical assessment is a 30-45min comprehensive examination. During this assessment, the Podiatrist will ask you a range of questions that will help determine what the cause of your problem is. They will ask you to pin point where your pain or issue is. Your Podiatrist will have a look at the way you stand (stance), the way you walk (gait) and your posture during both. They will also check how well your joints and muscles work together.

It is important to bring the shoes you regularly wear and any imaging (X-ray, Ultrasound, MRI, etc.) that you have had in the past to help aid the Podiatrist in diagnosing your condition. The Podiatrist will assess your shoes and determine whether they are the best shoes for your feet. If not, the Podiatrist will recommend a more appropriate shoe which will reduce pain and help you move better. Sometimes, even with comprehensive assessments, imaging may still be required to give us a better understanding as to why the issue is happening. If this is the case, the Podiatrist can refer you for X-ray or Ultrasound under medicare (inclusive of your assessment cost).

Your Podiatrist will give you a diagnosis, explain why you are having your issue and provided your with a management plan which will help you get better. Your tailored management plan will be explained to you, the risks, benefits and costs will also be discussed. You will be provided a print out of your management plan.

DO I HAVE TO HAVE AN ISSUE OR PAIN TO GET MY FEET CHECKED?

You do not have to be experiencing issues in your feet to have an assessment. It is recommended that you have a foot assessment with your Podiatrist once a year. Podiatrist are skilled in picking up subtle changes in your feet and legs which may predispose you to pain in injury in the future. This is recommended for people of all ages, including kids who just started walking to the very elderly.
